Social Media and Friends Lists

A comment by archmage kinda sparked me into examining the social media that I use and how I use it.  He wondered why people prefer Facebook, as opposed to other less-superficial venues like LiveJournal (although I'm sure LJ can be just as superficial, but I digress)

It's not that I prefer Facebook over LJ.  It's that I use FB for keeping in touch with ( Read more... )

I enjoy what you write, whenever you do write. I'd like to be back on the list. I don't post as often as I have in the past, but that's because I've been stuck at home, and haven't been working much.

I've noticed the same differences you mentioned. I tend to keep closer friends on LJ, and use other forms of social media for more distant relationships. While I don't have a FB (although several friends have created a group dedicated to getting me to join, bless their poor hearts), I imagine I'd use it much the same way as you do.

Sad part is that I know exactly why people like FB. it's the same reason (in my mind, anyway) why peopel are perfectly happy to pay through the nose for entertainment that they will openly admit is great "as long as you turn your brain off". We're being bred and conditioned to think less and less, and the less we are forced to actually interact with each other and use our brains, the easier and easier we are to control.

Wow, that came off sounding incredibly "conspiracy theorist."

Yeah, I'd agree that's that reason most people like it, but I don't really prefer it, in general. It's just easier to reach a broad audience with a short message. I've always been protective of my LJ and careful of who can view my entries. On FB, it's fluff for the masses.

FB is convenient. It's fast action, but LJ is where I write thoughts that are more in depth. Like you said about FB, people you'd like to keep in touch with, but aren't necessarily close to you.

This kind of sums up how I feel -- FB is for meandering musings, LJ is for when I feel like I have something to say.
