Washing fabric before hand

Everytime I wash my flannel before hand, the edges start fraying and I have a ton of lint on my fabric.  Am I doing something wrong when I prewash them?

It's normal for it to fray somewhat. You can minimize this by clipping off the corners, like an inch or so. No idea why this works, but it does.

As to lint, drying in the dryer should take care of that. Pretty normal for the first few times cotton fabric is washed.

Nope, you're not doing anything wrong. It's just because it's a woven fabric. I overlock/serge the edges of my flannel and quilter's cotton before pre-washing, otherwise it ends up all tangled together. Trimming the edges with pinking shears should work too.

I have started to trim the edges with pinking shears and it still does it. I thought pinking shears would solve everything and my fabrics said, "NO THANK YOU."

I just did two loads of prewashing. I'm buying too much flannel for pads, yo. :p Mighhhhht be addicting

Love flannel!
Nope you are doing nothing wrong. When I prewash my fabrics, I just toss them into the machine, no special pre-treatment :) I have a front loader so it doesn't put much stress on the fabric.
