Good news about PUL!?!?

Nov 13, 2010 01:24

We were talking the other day, about using natural material, and how sad that we couldn't find any natural products for waterproofing.
While not natural, it seems that PUL would be a better alternative, at least if I understand this right it seems to be degradable. It's about the Snappi diaper fastener which is made from polyurethane, and I am ( Read more... )

I need to go pull the specifications on PUL to answer this correctly, but I'm not at my computer. From personal experience, yes, PUL ultimately breaks down. Whether or not it's breaking down in any biodegradable way, I don't honestly know. But it doesn't last forever.

Also, in general, I find that using PUL to replace disposable products utlimately is a far bigger help than not. I'd rather one PUL item in a landfill than 1000 disposable ones, ya know? But I do get the concern.

No, PUL is not biodegradable. However, it's still a better choice than disposable products.

If I wasn't using PUL - or other waterproof plastic, I wouldn't be able to use cloth pads, so I'd be using disposables... which is not only worse for the environment IMHO but worse in health reasons too...

So the way I see it is that it's an evil, sure... but so are many things in our lives... and the more we can limit, the better, but we're not going to be able to go 100% completely perfectly biodegradable and reusable in our lives, there are still going to be some aspects that have waste of some kind, but anything we can do to limit waste is good.

Yes, that's how I see it too, I was just hoping this meant it would deteriorate in a landfill a little sooner than the disposable ones.
But as you say, one little piece of PUL instead of lots and lots of disposables is so much better.
I made, and tried, my first pad with PUL film today, and I can honestly say I didn't know what I was missing out on:D
