I would really love to know when the city decided that starting work on the road at midnight was a good idea. Seriously, I mean... Why not work on it during the day, when it's actually light outside?

Maybe there's an obvious answer, I don't know. All I know is that it's a little surprising to be woken up by the sound of a jackhammer in the middle

Not really; the nearest freeway is several miles away. Usually, if there's going to be some kind of construction during the night, it's listed in the paper, but there was nothing like that for any road work.
