today, for the first time in my 6+ year career as a server, i upended an entire tray of food on the floor in the middle of my crowded restaurant.
fortunately my table, whose hot meal i totally destroyed, was patient and understanding. it might have had something to do with my tearful apology and bbq sauce-dripping appendages.

a) though i've never dropped a tray, one time when i was working in mobile i tried my hand at being a master plate stacker. i walked out of the swinging kitchen doors into the bar area where everyone was drinking and smoking, and basically just turned my elbows upward for no apparent reason and threw all six plates of food on the floor. i didn't stumble, or trip. i just twitched and spazzed in front of bar full of drunk alabamians, who started clapping and wooping while i silently turned around and walked back into the kitchen.
b) at fuds, we were so busy all the time that every shift had a designated food runner. once, while i was at another table in my section, i watched the runner (who had been working in the restaurant for 8+ yrs and never dropped a tray) go to sit the tray down on the jack, and miss jack entirely. what she did hit was my entire table. meanwhile, i had stopped listening to whatever ( ... )
