Surprise post because it was too long for Facebook by the time I finished it.

Or, a post about Zombie Nazi horror films.

So... Dead Snow - Zombie Nazis rather than Nazi Zombies (the latter implies that they became Nazis after zombification surely). Not sure I was keen on running, tree-climbing zombies either, but I suppose they were not traditional zombies. A lot of nice references to other horror films also (although AprilRead more... )

I noticed the "April Fools Day" belm as well but then it was just further proof that the writers of "Dead Snow" couldn't give a flying fuck about writing even the simplest, most formulaic of scripts. I hated that film. I know it's not meant to be taken seriously but even as a goofball homage, it just failed on all levels (not least of all the fact that it wasn't funny).

"Zombie Lake" is a nice old nazi zombie film.

Yeah, there was absolutely nothing new with Dead Snow although it was still good in places. Like when he gets bitten in the arm, so feels he has to cut his arm off, and then gets bitten in the balls just after he's cut his arm off. I'm sure I've seen that zombie pun many times before.

I'll check out zombie Lake though. It would be nice to see a zombie Nazi film done right. Outpost has got as close as I've seen; it was obviously borrowing a lot from the whole Wolfenstein franchise but it just needed more castles and Zeppelins.

I didn't really enjoy "Outpost". There was a lot of just people-wandering-around-in-the-dark stuff without much to really hook in my attention.

There hasn't really been a GOOD zombie nazi film. "Zombie Lake" I think I just like for nostalgic reasons. It's very dated and strange - some nonsense punctuated by a few really cool zombie scenes.

I think the reason I liked Outpost is that it actually gave some vague credibility to the creation of zombies - the SS and their occult experiments for creating a super-human master race gone wrong. It always seemed more interesting than zombies being created through viruses or just generally dying pissed off, unfinished business etc. It gives zombies a heritage which I think works really well and opens up the possibility for zombie variations which is where the Wolfenstein franchise works really well - i.e. Raiders Of The Lost Ark gone one step further. I note that Outpost II is in development as well, but will probably be rubbish.

Slightly worried about Zombie Lake given that IMDB seems to think it's the worst zombie movie ever made.

Dead Snow was more fun than Outpost, but the latter is definitely a better film.

Outpost also pisses all over that Brit WWI film from a few years back - The Tranch or something like that?

Trench, even.

Yeah, The Trench was pretty terrible. Daniel Craig got a nomination for Best Actor from the British Independent Film Awards - must have been a slow year.

To be honest, I couldn't really take seriously any awards nominated by an organisation named 'Biffa'. ;)

TBH I thoroughly enjoyed Dead Snow. Yes it was clichéed, yes, it was formulaic, but I thought for the fairly small budget they did alright with it. The characters were mostly likeable - I was disappointed when the 2 most capable characters died though. Nice effects with the guts & brains too.
