This is a repost from my Myspace blog. It is quite long, so for those of you who like to complain about long posts, I've put it behind a cut. I'd suggest you read it though. This post is more for the Houston scene than about me.
You know I've had something cooking in my mind now for a bit. Allot of people have asked me if I was going to get back into doing nights or a night here in Houston. To be perfectly honest, when I first got back, the answer was no. Right now, it's still no, however, as I think more and more about it, I'm starting think that maybe I should try and do something. I just wonder if Houston's ready for what I want to bring. I've been in L.A. and I've been to the clubs there and I've seen how they do things and I want to bring that to the Houston crowd. But I'm not sure if Houston's ready for it on a few levels.
Q?: Are people going to support it?
In the past and even currently, the scene has gotten very small and in the past has not been the most supportive of crowds for anything myself or the other promoters have put together. If I'm going to sink my own personal money and time into something, I have to know that there will be support and not just for a few weeks. A lasting support is needed. Support also does not qualify with 50 people. Support has to make sure the night makes the venue money. I think that's something most here have never quite realized is that you're not just supporting the promoter; you're actually supporting the venue hosting the night. If you don't come out, they get rid of the night at best or wind up shutting down at worst.
Q?: Where can I do the kind of night I want to do?
If I'm going to throw a weekly, I want someplace that is going to allow for the unknown. Houston venues are not known for taking those kinds of risks. Unlike L.A., the clubs here thrive because their nights are carefully thought out and the risks are minimalized because they go for the sure thing over the risk. While this assures the venue makes money and stays open, it doesn't allow for new ventures.
Q?: What night of the week would I do it on?
Number's has Friday nights cornered and for good reason. They've been around a long time and people know that if they go, they will have a good time. Thursdays have proven to be a slow night in Houston as well. Wednesday nights used to be the night, but since Pop Muzik closed, it's seen a rapid decline among our crowd as a viable night to go out.
Q?: What ages would I allow in?
In the past I tried to stick to 21+ to attract the older crowd, but the simple fact is that the older crowd doesn't come out much anymore, maybe on the weekends but weekdays? Most are staying home so they can go to a job in the morning. So that means I need to attract the younger crowd. Besides, when it comes right down to it, the old blood is dying out, the young blood needs something and they need someone who is going to bring them something fun.
Something else I think has gone on is that the people behind the events, me included, have wanted everyone to know it was them that did the night. That if it hadn't been for them, the night would not exist. While I was in L.A. I knew who threw the nights, but only because it was the Dj's that threw the nights. They not only Dj'ed it, but planned it and promoted it, but they go their names known because they were fantastic Dj's with allot of talent and knowledge of the music they were spinning. Something else I noticed is that they didn't do many guest Dj's at all. Even if someone was well known, they still didn't give them a guest spot. This wasn't because they were egomaniacal. This was because they knew what the crowd wanted and why their crowd was there and there was no reason to mess that up by letting someone who was not intimate with their crowd come in and Dj.
For those who don't know, I've gone back to my roots. I spin EBM, IDM, Futurepop, and Electropop these days, most of the emphasis is on the stompy music. It's fun and always has a danceable beat. On top of that I'm playing more current music, you might here some old Covenant or VNV in my sets, but for the most part, I play music that came out in the past 3 years.
So what is it that I want to bring Houston? Well, I'd like to bring them something equivalent to Das Bunker L.A. Hell, if there was enough support and a good enough venue, I might even go so far as to call up the man behind Das Bunker and see if he'd allow me to start Das Bunker Houston. But again, I have the concerns listed above. Other than Underworld's monthly bash, Houston has very little in terms of the Industrial scene and yet I know lots of people who love the music. I wonder if maybe things have become so stagnant that people just don't need something new that they've never experienced to get them back out. Of course what that entails is taking risk, something that Houston venues are not known for.
I feel like I'm in a very interesting position because I know that if I could get the venue and the right night, with what I've learned and seen while in L.A., I could bring something new and fun for the Houston crowd and maybe help get the scene back on the road again. It's so sad to look around and realize that there's nothing really to do but once a month or to go to the HaVoK warehouse and from what I hear, not many people even want to go to that due to the heat and no bar.
So I'm going to put it to the Houston crowd. Do you guys want something new and interesting? If so, what do you want? What are you looking for in a fun club night in the Industrial scene? If I could put it together, would you help support it? Would you be willing to help promote the night and help get people aware of it? What night would you want it on?
This is your chance my fellow Rivets and Goths and whatever else you may be in the dark scene to help revitalize your scene. So repost this and let me know. If I see enough real support, who knows, maybe I'll put something together for you all!
I want to say this before I end this, this is not intended to insult anyone or start any drama. If you think that this is what I'm trying to do, then I'm sorry, you're sadly mistaken. This is strictly an attempt to try and help revitalize the scene in my hometown, but mostly to give people something else fun to do in this town.
