I'm (not) alright Jack, keep your hands off of my stack!

Fuck fuck fukitty fuck fuck fuck. Yeah, so I ran out of check registers about two or three weeks ago and since then I've been writing it all on paper... Problem is, I've misplaced one of the old papers and now I don't know if I recorded that $50 I sent Chris on paypal last week. To make matters worse, I seem to have lost a receipt for the gas I ( Read more... )

Does your bank offer online banking? If it does, you can see a full list of all transactions (minus any outstanding checks that haven't been cashed). Otherwise, I'm sure your bank can print out the same information for you. Ever since I started online banking, I stopped balancing a checkbook. Since I use my debit card for practically everything, it would be insane to keep track of everything. I just check my account every few days to look for any suspicious charges.

*Chuckles.*

I used to do that too. Then I realized that it takes some time for things to clear and my bank wasn't always current with what I had and had spent. It's one of the fall backs of living hand to mouth: broke ass mofos like me and Glenn are always an inch away from an NSF fee.

My suggestion was to figure out the worst case scenario balance (i.e., how much money he'd have left IF he double recorded that transaction), take out the remaining cash minus a small amount to stay in the account, and then not use plastic for a few days until everything should have cleared. That will give him an actual real time balance to start over again. If the transaction was already recorded, great! He's ahead of the game by that much. If not, well, he'd still be in the black once the dust settles.

My bank does indeed offer online banking and, unlike Jim's bank, it's updated instantaneously whenever I use my debit card. That being said, as a "precaution" against my account being hacked, my bank requires me to change my log in password every 30 days and after the first two months of this, I just hated it and stopped using the online banking.

All of this being said, I found the old paper I had been recording my balance on and I did indeed record the money I sent to Chris. I also just overestimated the cost of my gas by 3-5 dollars just to be safe. Hopefully I should be in the clear until I get to Staples to get more check registers.
