It depends, really. Technically, if they're not from Spain, no, they shouldn't be called Spanish. 'Course, if they're not from Mexico, or of Mexican descent, they shouldn't be called Mexican as a catch-all either. There are a host of countries that speak Spanish, most of them South American, and of course, umpteen dialects of Spanish accordingly.

And it's been a subject of at times hot debate -- the whole Hispanic vs Latino label that some folks get very irate about. Then you get the "La Raza" crowd. *eyeroll* But the generic term would be Hispanic or Latino. Ask your coworkers which is least offensive, as it varies place to place, people to people. As for Mexican being derogatory... pfft. Only if you let it. Gotta remember, at one point, almost every ethnicity was an immigrant and got the same treatment. "Irish" used to be used the same way. Times change.

thanks for the input, I guess there really is no right and wrong here, its just based on everyone's personal preference. Although I have to admit hispanic or latino just sounds too clinical, I dunno why really heh. I was prolly going with Spanish cuz ive been so fixated on learning well... Spanish :3
