Good gobeldy goo! What a week!
Seems the networking I've been doing lately has paid off.
Early on, I managed to land several gigs at the hands of Zack of
Evil Empire Productions. (Thank you very much Zack. You're a great guy and deserve all the success you're having lately.) Dates and info for those shows are listed below. Offers to DJ house parties and other smaller events (joyfully) are kicking my ass every weekend solid since early June because they keep coming in clusters and batches...followed by the afterparty to the afterparty.
I have my boy Flip (aka Mr. Phantastik) working to acquire a venue in Midtown ATL we can rent on the cheap (which includes security and bar staff) to throw weekly events. It's a hookup he has through a friend of his, but figures we have been in the Atlanta DJ scene for a very long, long time and still scrap week to week to get gigs, so why not create our own gig for ourselves and make some cash doing it? Between all our resources we have with flyers, art, sound equipment, promotion, web design, lighting, video mixing/projection, talented DJs, etc. - there's no reason why we can't have a successful run. Looks like we might have that up and running by October, maybe November at the latest.
This past Friday is a clear example of how my luck has been running lately. We're talking about another classic "No shit. There I was..." story all day long. I woke up with an IM on my computer early that morning. I responded. The conversation rolled out and lead to an unexpected surprise from said IM buddy that I can't say much more about. (Thank you. You know who you are.) Later that afternoon, I went to the local laundromat to wash some clothes. While I was there, I started calling people to check up on them and then tell about the plethora of gigs I have coming up. After my 4th call or so, I'm pacing about the laundromat...I turn around to mosey back the other direction to find some lady whipping out her business card for me to take. She says, "Hi. I'm Tawanda. I'm not sure what you do, but I couldn't help but overhear some of the concerts and venues you've been telling your friends about. I know that you must have talent to get your foot in the door at a lot of those places. Give me a call. I own my own booking agency. I want to do business with you." (I had a hard time keeping a straight face while I explained who I was and all the things I do, because I instantly became giddy like a vapid schoolgirl because this was happening at all. I mean c'mon. At a laundromat? On my day off? Plus, I looked like a steaming pile anyhow - unshaven in old shorts and a stained white tanktop. This was cool as hell to me.) Hours later the same day...I get a call from Karma telling me he picked up the headliners for the foam party rave at the Atrium that was happening that night. Karma tells me he's been comparing Johnny Dangerously to me steadily ever since they left the airport. Eventually, Johnny said, ok... I wanna meet this B-Naut guy if we're so much alike and he's that awesome. Put him on my VIP Guestlist for the show tonight." After I cancelled all my other appointments with much apologies, I wound up getting into the rave for free to meet up with Viro, Rob Analyze, Johnny Dangerously (factoid: Johnny is one of the few remaining caucasian members of the Zulu Nation founded by Afrikka Bambaata.), and 13 other DJs. By the end of the night, I spoke to Viro and Rob who want to take me to their club in Florida to DJ and run visuals for them...Johnny wants to help me get my singles pressed on vinyl and have them distributed internationally...I have Rob on board to help maybe produce the remixes I'm doing for RuggedNRaw in NYC - he gave me his home phone number to get things rolling ASAP. PLUS to top off my Friday evening, the promoter from the foam party has just booked me for 2 more gigs at the Atrium. The first is a locals-only party Mr. Phantastik and I will be headlining, DJing on FOUR turntables tagging in and out. The second is a party at the Atrium where I'll be doing visuals and DJing with none other than
UK heavyweights AQUASKY!!!
To coin a quote from IceCube, "Today was a good day."
After the foam party was done, we hit the afterparty at
Altimeter's house. A good few showed up, but the rest of the people talking about coming must have gotten distracted along the way. Anyhow, I managed to add a couple new students to teach how to DJ. Then I met Chilly which totally freaked out about my DJ set so much he contacted all his friends so they all could come out to hear me play. (Enthusiastic fanboys/fangirls. *sigh* You gotta love them.) Chilly also is getting Karma his first used Technics 1200 for only $50. (For you non-DJs out there, street price for this industry-standard turntable is $500). I'm pondering buying it for myself if Karma turns it down.
I got home from Altimteter's house at 8pm. (Remember, I left MY house 24 hours earlier.) I sat down. I passed out on my couch. My phone rings. "Hey. You ready to go DJ that loft party you told me about tonight?" Groggy and wiping the crust outta my eyes, I reply, "Oh shit. You're here already, aren't you?" "Yeah." "Ok...come in. Sit down. I need to wake up, get a shower, n get dressed." I'd forgotten in my punch drunk stupor that I had a loft party to go play after midnight and invited five others to follow me there. I get refreshed. We leave. We arrive. Tank, the host of the loft party, tells me (with said friends heaving from climbing three flights of stairs with my record collection...), "Dude, the sound guy I hired flaked on me. Party was cancelled this evening. Nobody called you?" I pointed to the five people I brought with me plus the six others in the parking lot waiting to hear me play. (Chilly went and got his boys rounded up to come hear this B-Naut guy he was bragging about all day.) I stayed a little while to appease my friends and fans. Got home at around 5am Sunday morning. I woke up in front of my computer here with my leg numb at 4:30 pm.
The end. (So far.)
Dates and details to upcoming shows I'll be doing (both DJing and live VJing/video mixing) are listed below. My apologies for the lack of info as to whom I'm opening for and others involved, but the promoters have not released that information to me or to the public yet. I'll post flyer images and further info as it is released. =)
