Disney's Next Pirates of the Caribbean sequel to be based on Tim Powers' "On Stranger Tides."

Based on the quality of the last film, I can't say I have much hope that this will be very good, much less faithful to the book. Still, this is interesting.

I have some hopes for it -- they really didn't need to option the book, and it's not well enough known to be a selling point, so presumably there was something in the book they wanted to use.

At least it's not "the next Bond film will be based upon Declare"

I'm just wondering how much they'll mangle it. I assume they'll keep a few story elements and maybe part of the plot, at best.

I actually read an interview with Powers, and he said people kept telling him, "have you heard about the new Pirates movie? It sounds a lot like your book." And they didn't quite believe him when he told them it was optioned.

I haven't read it, but what I have read of Powers leads me to believe he has a fairly original idea that they really want.

You might want to check the book out. It's not my favorite of his works, but it's not bad, and it's more accessible than Last Call or Declare.
