Ah yes, the definitive Top Ten seems nigh impossible. I could be quite content to listen to your selections for the rest of my life - and yet, only one of the above titles appeared on the Top Ten I submitted to a KEXP DJ poll earlier this year.

Care to guess which one?

I chose Colossal Youth too - it's one of those quietly landmark records. I think most of my favourite albums would be one-offs like that one (though of course inter-band acrimony meant that there couldn't be a follow-up) rather than the greatest album from, say, The Beatles' oeuvre - I love records which are unique and unrepeatable "worlds". Might, then, choose The Promenaders on Y Records, a document of Steve Beresford, Lol Coxhill, David Toop and others in a busking band, playing on Brighton seafront in the early '80s (wish I'd seen them !). The Pianosaurus (toy instrument band) album is terrific too (there was a second - unreleased - one I've never heard).

And even if the 21st Century Young Marble Giants do make a second album, it couldn't and wouldn't sound like Colossal Youth.

It's like I always say: If I could teleport back to the 1960s for one show, and I had my choice between Woodstock and Nick Drake in his Cambridge dorm room, I'd have to pick the dorm room. It wouldn't even be a contest.
