Personally, I went for shotgun, even tho I vastly prefer my pistols. Most "bad guys" are going to know the sound of a shotgun being pumped. If they aren't out the door at that, then the spray should remove the threat easier than trying to use a pistol in close confines. Get the kids behind you, point and pull, yanno? Now, if husband and I are both home, the pistols are mine =P But if it's just me, Frankie the Shotgun is first choice. Also, I can get the trigger lock off the shotgun rapidly, not so much for the pistol. I can have Frankie loaded and shot twice in the time it'd take to undo one of the pistols. I'd need to get a combination box for the pistol I guess... ah the things to add to the "buy before kid" list, eh ( ... )

Get a semi-auto 12-gauge. Most can fire six rounds (5 plus 1 in the chamber) in less than two seconds. You can still get a conceal permit. Just borrow a friend's gun to take the test. They're good to have. I need to get mine soon. Noah said he'd let me use his handgun to take it.
