I found out that those gourds I keep seeing on people's walls are bottle gourds. They used to be hollowed out and used as sake containers, and you see that distinctive shape used for dishes and sweets sometimes. Turns out you can make cool lamps with them, too.
I always think best when I'm moving. One of the few problems I have with living in Tokyo

The amount of alone time I need/enjoy in order to function, is one reason why I did not consider myself ready to be a parent. I admire your honesty with yourself as well as hope that you can find some balance. Tape recorder sounds like a great solution. I don't know if you own a cell phone, but even when the lowly answering machine was all there was, I recall people leaving themselves messages.
