Severus paused long enough to wipe sweat from his brow before bending over his books again, a feverish intensity to his entire being at the moment. He didn't even care that Varian was talking to him, so focused was he on his research, and it wasn't until he felt a fist collide lightly with his shoulder that he actually looked up, glaring at his friend.

"What?" he asked tersely, almost daring Varian to say something, a challenge which the petite older teen took up with relish.

"Did you even hear what I said, you dolt? That girl in your class, Mary whats-her-face was badmouthing you again in the Great Hall while you were conveniently up here obsessing over your studying," Varian said bluntly, eyebrows arching up at hearing that tone from Severus. He smirked and reached out to push his friend's hair out of his face before saying in a somewhat suggestive tone, "I enjoy studying too, Severus, but sometimes I really think you need to get laid."

"What makes you think I don't get laid?" Severus shot back, stress evident in his voice.

Varian's smirk deepened, and he didn't say anything to that, silent for long enough that Severus just snorted and went back to his books. A moment later, he felt Varian's foot nudging his under the table, and he looked up sharply, only to see Varian studying his nails as if they were fascinating. Severus moved his feet away, and made a pretense of going back to studying, only to hide a smile when he felt Varian's foot nudging his more insistently this time. Another glance up showed a smug little smile on Varian's face, and he shook his head.

"Keep it up, Avery, and I'm going to try out my new hex on you," Severus said, putting more annoyance into his tone than he actually felt.

"Oooh, I like it when you talk dirty to me," Varian replied, voice low and suggestive. He leaned forward, elbows on the table now, and smirked again, gaze fixed intently on Severus' face, and a moment later, he asked, "What are you studying for, anyway?"

"... Professor Slughorn has us researching the properties of the more obscure ingredients in love potions," Severus said after a long pause, his face pinkening.

"Oh really?" Varian's smirk widened into a grin, and he laughed before asking, "Isn't it frowned upon for students to brew love potions?"

"We're not brewing them!" Severus protested indignantly, spluttering as his face flushed darker. "We're writing an essay on love potions and why certain ingredients are found in all the different types of love potions, and why their use needs to be regulated. Didn't you have this essay two years ago?"

Varian laughed at Severus' reaction, and then said flippantly, "Of course I did. But you're being so boring sitting here poring over these books. Tell you what. Why don't you come back to my dorm room and... lecture me on the subject." He gave Severus a sly grin and rubbed his foot up the younger teen's leg a bit, enjoying the way Severus blushed and sputtered even more at that before saying, "Maybe I can demonstrate some of the effects of a love potion, hmm?"

"Meaning what, exactly?" Severus asked skeptically, pointedly ignoring the way his pulse sped up at the thought of such a demonstration.

Varian glanced around them quickly to make sure no-one was in the immediate area, and scooted his chair close enough to lean in and whisper into Severus' ear, "If you have to ask, you aren't as smart as you look." As if to punctuate his point, he brushed his tongue against the younger teen's ear before sitting back as if nothing had happened.

He didn't think he had ever seen anyone pack up so fast in his life.
