The day after the Hogsmeade trip, Lily was sitting in the shade beneath her favourite tree, stewing over the mess that had been the previous day and just hoping that Severus would come find her so she could let her frustrations out, but over an hour had passed with no sign of him. So, like the good friend she was, she gathered herself up and started for the library instead. If he wasn't there, chances were high that he’d be hiding from everyone in his dorm, and she wouldn't be able to talk to him unless she managed to catch him at dinner - but luckily he was there, if a little cross looking. She sat down gingerly beside him, giving him a tentative smile as she settled in.

“Is everything alright?” she asked quietly, not wanting to attract Madame Pince's attention. Severus only snorted derisively in answer, giving her a pointed glance before going back to glaring at… whatever book he was pretending to read. “Okay, stupid question, I know. Is this about what James and Sirius did yesterday?”

“I don't want to talk about them, Lil,” Severus grumbled, glaring harder at the book and hunching his shoulders protectively. She gave him a sad look and reached over to rest her hand gently on his shoulder, sighing a little when he flinched away from her. She didn't let up, just rubbed gently at his shoulders until he relaxed a little bit.

“You know you can always talk to me, Sev,” she said, giving him a tiny smile in an effort to get him to smile back. It was such a rare thing that she cherished every one.

“Yeah… I know,” he replied with a sigh, hanging his head a bit before glancing up at her through his hair. “I really just don't want to talk about it. It won't change anything.”

“Then why don't we both stop moping and actually go do something else? It's a nice day out, we should take advantage of it,” Lily suggested, leaning over to rest her head against his shoulder. Her fingers brushed against the back of his neck for a moment and, though she'd never let on that she noticed his reactions, his hushed intake of breath made her smile wider. “Come outside with me, okay? I missed spending time with you yesterday.”

“What?” She looked up at him then, and smirked at the tiny, surprised smile on his face. “But I thought… it would be better if I left. You would have been upset if there was a fight, and Potter wasn't letting up.”

“So? I wanted to spend time with you, not him,” Lily said, standing up and grabbing his hand. “Come on, let's go. You can make it up to me now.”

“Oh, fiiiine,” he said, trying and failing to hide his pleased smile. Lily just laughed at his half-assed attempt to sound annoyed, and squeezed his hand a little before tugging him along behind her.
