Do NOT lease a car! Any financial advisor would tell you that it is a big waste of money. Besides, I'll sell you my car! :) It runs great, we just want to get a 4-door in case we decide to breed.
The best way to do it is to keep cars until you run them into the ground. Mine's a 1997, paid for, and although I've had to sink about a grand into it over the past year and a half for repairs (mostly my own stupid fault for not getting the brakes looked at sooner) I anticipate it'll be running for a while. My previous car was a 91 with over 150,000 that died because I never bothered to replace the timing belt, and it would have cost more to repair than it was worth. It's not a good idea to trade in a car unless you own it outright, if you are "upside down" on your lease you are setting yourself up for a world of pain. They will just tack on that extra money to your new loan, keeping you in debt forever. So IMHO, it's not a good idea to buy a new new car either, since they depreciate about 20% just driving it off the lot.
Wow my job has turned me into such an accountant. Sorry guys! :) I'll spare you my diatribe about renting, since I don't want to p!ss off all these people that don't know me even more.
Yep my dear husband drives a 2002 Dodge Dakota Sport 4x4 (he got it new). He talked me into it because we use it to stea- er, borrow his parent's boat and he was supposed to start a contracting business. So much for that.
Melissa you should check out Chesterfield prices! We only paid about $150,000 for a 3 b/r, 2.5 bath in a really good school district! There are tradeoffs for living in the middle of nowhere. :) I miss movies at the Naro, Lynnhaven Mall, MacArthur Mall, the tacky stores on Atlantic, shows at the NorVa, that Irish Pub on Granby St... so much goodness. I don't miss the traffic and getting dry humped by Navy guys in the clubs whose idea of a pick up line is "hey baby I'm going to OCS school next week!". No offense if you or your man is Navy.
This summer come visit Central VA and we'll take you on the boat! (Her name is Float On.) Just a ski boat, nothing too fancy, but Lake Anna is a lot of fun. Rachel & Adam can come down from Delaware!
