I, personally, don't care too much for it. It seems too ... sexually derived for a wedding song. and the fact that the guy refers to his girlfriend as "girl" really irks me.
I know, when I get married, I'd like my wedding song to be "The Rose" by Bette Midler. Get metaphoric imagry in the song:
Some say love it is a river that drowns the tender reed Some say love it is a razer that leaves your soul to blead
Some say love it is a hunger an endless aching need I say love it is a flower and you it's only seed
It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance It's the dream afraid of wakingthat never takes the chance It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give and the soul afraid of dyingthat never learns to live
When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long and you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong Just remember in the winterfar beneath the bitter snows lies the seed that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the rose
Sexually derived? Nah, it's definitely a song of the heart and not .... uhhhh .... testosterone? Of course, if you haven't heard it I suppose you can only really make your own interpretation of the lyrics as you personally see them. Download it and give it a listen -- it's one of the more heartfelt songs I've ever heard ... it has an almost gospel-like aura about it, very inspiring.
The thing I also like about it is its not totally played out and cliche ... yanno, in a list of "suggested wedding songs" from www.planyourtrendywedding.com or something. Certainly didn't think Id find my wedding song in the "Blues" section.
I see "The Rose" as a song of eternal bittersweet suffering, loneliness and waiting to be honest. I can definitely agree that it's a beautiful song, but the feeling of longing that I personally get from it isn't the feelingI'd want to represent my love for the man I'm going to spend the rest of my life with. *shrug* Different strokes, I guess....
idk - I read the lyrics and it came across as an r&b kind of song, which I absolutely hate (I cant stand r&b, hip hop or rap). I guess its the reference to the girl as "girl" and no something like "my love" or "my soulmate" or something equally romantic/sweet sounding. Whenever a guy as referred to me a "girl" it is always in a negative tone. as in "girl, what do you think you are wearing?" or "girl, get a life." even "girl, you dont even qualify for a woman." So, whenever to term girl is used, for me, it has a very derogatory and negative association.
To me, the rose is about suffering, yes, but keeping your head up through the suffering and finally finding the ray of hope, which comes in the form of love.
but, as you said - I cant determine if the song is good or not by just the lyrics. If I had a song download thing for my computer, I'd download it, but, alas, I removed all that stuff a while ago.
"I Found Love (When I Found You)" is definitely in the Blues category, since Kenny Wayne Sheperd is a blues artist ... if you'd like I can send you the song -- IM me on AIM if you get a chance: LunAAngeLLE.
PS I hear what yer saying about the "girl" thing ... its so demeaning in rap or pop or R&B (which Im not terribly fond of, either to say the very least lol). Yeah, Im not your property, thank you very much. w0rd. *twitch*
