oh honey, that blows. :(
I'm sorry you had to deal with that.
I can see where they're coming from, but what happened to our Southern upbringing, here?

Back in 1973, I was in a similar situation. I had a friend whom I really wanted to give a gift to, and I had found the perfect gift. I carefully wrapped it, and took it to her. She outright refusd it because "she didn't have a gift to give me." I was hurt. But, I looked at her and said, "Then give me the gift of being able to give this to you." She looked at me a long minute, and then took it. (BTW, she loved it!)

I believe that those people had your best interests at heart. They know that you don't have much money. Perhaps they went about it the wrong way, however, they DO care about you!

Societal customs aside, I'm with moonstone_fae, look at it in the best possible light, they were trying to do you a favor. I know the happiness of loving to give gifts...and the annoyance of provoking an unexpected response of 'What? Oh no!" when they can't reciprocate. I think the 'receiving' is just as important as 'giving'. I never care either, but am painfully aware of how much others DO ..AND how petty some people are about matching costs and what not. Whatever happened to 'it's the thought that counts"?? Right out the window apparently.
