hmm, interesting! I know it's slightly different in animals but my dog has epilepsy and one of the first times he ever had a seizure we were watching a movie with really loud/suspenseful music...

It does concern me, because I'm trying to write fanfic where Sweetrobin is featured, and I don't just want to use him as a prop. What triggers his malady? Is it stress-related, associated with light, music or reading? And since epilepsy has been studied in detail only in the later 20th century--EEGs, etc.--we have little or no information how it would have been treated in the middle ages.

In ASOS, when they're leaving the Eyrie, I can't remember if it's the maester or what, but he's concerned about the feast that the Royce's are going to throw for them when they get there, and wants to ask them not to have music so it doesn't set Sweetrobin off. Sansa says he likes music, or that music calms him, but doesn't like singing, specifically.

My cat has epilepsy but his seizures only happen when he's asleep.

One of my friends has epilepsy, and I think her seizures happen when she's awake. The last one happened when she was on the treadmill at the gym. I can ask her for more details on triggers, if you like.

I think Robert Arryn has hydrocephalus, which can cause sufferers to develop epilepsy. I think it happens in 1 out of 4 cases or something. You can read the article about it here. A lot of the symptoms sound like Sweetrobin.

Thanks for the hydrocephalus article--will look up the web to find out course of treatment followed in 1930s. Specifically, would a child suffering from hydrocephalus be educated at all, educated at home or sent to a day school?

What if Alayne/Sansa decides to go to the Quiet Isle or Braavos' House of Healing for a diagnosis? I keep getting the feeling that she will land up there--if Arya's with the Faceless Men, becoming an assassin, either Sansa or Jeyne Westerling (who knows much about healing) will be at the other place. Thanks a lot for the help!

I could see Robert needing further medical help from one of said places. I think where he ended up as far as schooling is concerned would depend on how severe his illness was. I'm sure that reading and school work wouldn't provoke his "shakes" as we see them in the book, but I doubt Robert would ever be able to be trained at arms or do anything especially physical.
