Every time I think of writing some commentary on the fanfics I'm working on, I start wondering if this sort of thing is really necessary, or if anyone else is actually going to care. Is this, basically, the best use of my Livejournal that I can think of ( Read more... )

fanfic, question

I'd give you advice, but Michigan weather does whatever the hell it feels like.

Oh, and it doesn't snow EVERY YEAR in May. Just most of them. :P

For being well into autumn, you'd generally be safe with November, maybe late October. Wikipedia of course has a lot of details if you want more specific dates; they also have a good article about harvest festivals. As for weather... I'd check Wikipedia for that too. I'm in central Texas, which has rather different weather than the area you're dealing with. (Also, our trees are confused and half seem to drop their leaves in the spring instead of the fall.)

The general pattern for seasons (at least in Philadelphia) is this:

Winter: December - January - February
Spring: March - April - May
Summer: June - July - August
Autumn: September - Octocber - November

Officially, seasons start on their respective solstices (winter and summer) and equinoxes (vernal and autumnal), which are actually fairly late in their starting months (this year's summer solstice was June 20th, for example), but those are the months pop culture tends to associate with the seasons, and whether the weather will acually reflect the calendar dates tends to vary from one year to the next. One winter might see Philadelphia hit with several blizzards, and another barely any snow at all.

As for your story, October/November would make a good time for a harvest festival. In fact, the American Thanksgiving holiday (4th Thursday of November) is said to have descended from one held by Native Americans which they invited newly-arrived European settlers to (or at least that's something like how the story goes).

It depends a little bit how far north. I've been told that Tokyo and Seattle are quite similar. We get cheery blossoms in March & April. Our autumns are stunning. Starting mid September, the angle of the sun makes for a rich, golden light like honey or candlelight. The days start to be crisp; it is warm in the sun but the air itself feels like it comes from cool mountain slopes. October is the month for cold nights, which cause the color change in leaves. Harvest festivals in the northern hemisphere are typically in September through November. Akimatsuri is in October. Our JP population here celebrates it then ( ... )

I want to say here in Alabama leave change color around September, but we have so many pine trees here, it's hard to really remember.
