Somewhat dry in places, and rather too long, but still, this article has some interesting observations about the nature of online social networks. The last third or so is an indictment of MySpace (Which deserves all the indicting it can get for the hideous nature of the user profiles.). LiveJournal isn't mentioned at all ( Read more... )

Ahhh, Pibb. I'd actually love to see him turn up on #comicbooks. =P

*sniff* I...I finally broke down and made a MySpace. Too often I find myself there and unable to comment on something, or toss a note at someone. Couldn't take it anymore, and made a basic profile. Which also means it doesn't make your computer blow up or strike you blind. ;)

Amusingly enough, my first (and only) friend is a Phoenix...

I vaguely remember signing up when it was brand new, but I'll be dammed if I can remember what my username (number?) is.

LJ got mentioned as an aside, describing how many social networking sites Hillary has.

But you know me; I am very much a believer in "if you're an asshole online, you're an asshole."

Because I believed otherwise once, and RL'd the consequences of my naivete.

Good article, though.

I must have just scanned right over the LJ mention.

My big issue is with the attitude that online interactions are somehow less real or important than offline. It's distressingly common, and it bothers me.

As it does me.

Some of my closest offline friends started out as online friends, and some of my closest online friends are closer than people I know offline only.

How far behind does this put us with bothering with MySpace? ;)

That depends on the definition of "behind".

"Behind" as in "the rest of the world got there first"? Several years.

"Behind" as in "karma points lost for having contact with MySpace"? Infinite. I feel like I need a bleach shower now.

*snickers*

At least I'm ahead of the curve and already have a Facebook...which I also never touch!
