He looked into the mirror, smiling and noticing the reflection of the pair of pale, chapped lips. His tanned skin was a perfect contrast with the pristine white suit, his long brown strands of hair was cascading right past his shoulder, his wide chocolate eyes were looking as innocent as ever, if not a little tired - he knew he would be a handsome bridegroom, just like Kakashi said he would.

“Iruka-san…”

“I’ll be going now. Thank you for your work,” he nodded and smiled softly at the girl standing behind the counter, two big boxes clutched tightly in his hands. His suit was perfect, their suits were perfect, and their wedding was going to be just as perfect. They had definitely chosen the right agency to handle their wedding.

Was it five months ago when they first started to plan their wedding? He could not remember clearly but it did not matter much. They were going to get married real soon, Kakashi and him, husband and husband. He could not think of any title better than Hatake-san. Yes, he decided to follow Kakashi’s family name even though Kakashi insisted on following his. He won the little argument of course, he always did. Because Kakashi always allowed him to.

“Should I buy some ramen? Nah, I’ll just fix us some eggplant miso. Kakashi likes that better.”

He walked home with a smile tugged on his lips, the thought of “I’m going to get married” never left his mind even for a second. It hurt a bit to be smiling that much, his cheek muscle was protesting and his chapped lips were definitely bleeding right now. But again, it did not really matter. He was going to get married after all.

“Hey, I’m back. I went to pick up our suits. They look absolutely amazing,” he looked over to the couch and said enthusiastically once he entered his - no, their - apartment. He was really, really happy. In fact, the happiest he had been in a very long time. The Icha Icha series strewn across his living room, the messy scrolls scattered under his low table, the dog-fur-contaminated furniture, the random stickman doodles on his apartment walls… Suddenly, everything seemed so bearable for him. He was way too happy to be screaming his lungs out. He was getting married.

“I made you eggplant miso as dinner,” he smiled and licked away the drop of blood pooled at his lower lips as he set up the dining table. He really should not be smiling this much when his lips were this dry, they bled easily and it stung, for a little. “Eat more. You look better when you’re not too skinny,” putting another bowl of miso soup on the table, he said softly, almost silently.

His lover was awfully quiet these days.

“Iruka-sensei…”

“Don’t look like that. I’m getting married you know,” he reached up and ruffled the mop of blonde hair affectionately as he grinned at the ex-troublemaker. Naruto had grown so much over the years and it was not only restricted to his height. The Kyuubi vessel had definitely proved himself to the village - being worthy as a ninja, even more as a Hokage.

“I know but…”

“I’m NOT your daughter, okay? Stop looking so depressed on my big day,” he slung his arm over the blond’s broad shoulder and joked slightly. Gods, he was happy. He was so very, very happy. And he thought that Naruto should be happy for him as well because furrowed brows and downcast sight definitely did not look good on the whiskers-marked face, not even the slightest. Naruto was way too young to wear that kind of worried look.

“…Okay. I’ll see you at the altar.”

“That’s right. Go,” giving a little push on Naruto’s back, he looked behind him and smiled. Genuinely and so very sincerely.

“We’re getting married, Kakashi.”

He was smiling so wide again that it hurt. No, he did not mind even the least. The music was perfect - soothing but not too slow, calm but not too boring - just like how Kakashi liked it. The decorative white roses were blooming beautifully and the scent was slowly filling the secluded little garden. Sunlight that filtered through the thick leaves gave a glimmering look to the little area and the occasional light breeze perfected the warm weather. All of their friends and acquaintances were there and they were enjoying the food by Akimichi clan - the best catering service provider in Konoha, ninja only. Yes, everything was perfect.

How long had he waited just for today? He lost count. But then it did not matter, because this was worth the wait. This was worth every single minute and every single second of the wait. Clutching the little box tightly in one hand, he took a deep breath and walked towards the altar in steady strides. Naruto looked good in Hokage robe, he had to admit that.  And he was smiling so wide again that he felt his chapped lips tore open. He really ought to learn his lesson.

“Umino Iruka, will you have Hatake Kakashi to be your husband, to live together as friend and mate? Will you love him as a person, and respect him as an equal, sharing joy as well as sorrow, triumph as well as defeat?”

He smiled again. “Yes, I…”

“Iruka please… just stop this…”

He had never expected an objection during his wedding. No, he did not. Shocked, he turned to look at the person who spoke, his gaze sharp as a piercing knife. It was Anko.

“Iruka, just let it go already…”

He shook his head and turned his back to her, refusing to listen. He would not let it go, not when he was so close. He was going to marry Hatake Kakashi and he did not give a damn if any of his friends objected the wedding.

“Yes, I do,” looking at Naruto, he gave his answer, firm and determined. Opening the little box in his hand, he took out one of the silver bands and slipped it into his own ring finger. It was simple, just a ring made of platinum with the name Hatake Kakashi carved at the inner side of the ring. And it fitted his finger perfectly.

“Iruka-sensei…”

“It’s alright. You don’t need to ask. He’ll say yes for sure,” smiling again, he took a dog tag out of his pants pocket and looked at it adoringly. He did not wash off the dried blood so the tag was a dark shade of brown instead of the glittering silver it once had been. But again, it did not matter. It was Kakashi’s and that man was so far away from being tidy. Taking the other matching ring out of the box, he slipped the silver band into the necklace and watched the ring rested comfortably against the bloodied tag with the name Hatake Kakashi on it. Yes, it fitted perfectly as well.

“You should pronounce us as husband and husband now, Naruto,” gently poking the blond’s shaking hands, he reminded good-naturedly. The wedding was still progressing and Naruto being silent right now certainly did not help with anything.

“… We’ve heard your vows and your promise of faithful love… I now declare you to be husband and husband, in the… name of…”

He did not understand why people were crying in his wedding. Kurenai who did not cry in public, not even when Asuma passed away, Sasuke who cared about his pride more than anything else in the world, Shizune who did not show much emotion except when she was with Tsunade, Anko who had never shed a tear even when her cursed seal was activated, all of them, they were crying. Even Naruto who was usually carefree and optimistic was choking on his own tears.

He did not understand. So he was pissed. They were supposed to be congratulating him, not sniffling and shedding their tears behind his back or in front of him. Even if Kakashi was not loitering around in his apartment during dinner time to wolf down his homemade eggplant miso, even if Kakashi was not around to look at him trying on his wedding suit before their wedding, even if their perfect wedding was not-so-perfect because Kakashi was missing, even if the only remain of Kakashi that the Hunter nin found was the bloodied fucking dog tag, he did not care.

He was married with Hatake Kakashi, he was Hatake Iruka and these were all he needed to be happy.

A/N: So I killed Kakashi, again. Blame this on a song I heard unintentionally. I’ll revive him in my next fic. - -
