A Weekend of TV

I was thrilled that all of my TV shows this week were awesome. Even How I Met Your Mother which I haven't really been that enthusiastic about since Barney and Robin broke up. But they were nice enough to indulge us with this:

I don't think the show's advocating patriarchy or incest. Just because it's part of the story doesn't make it the message of the story. Even the iffy Dothraki stuff is somewhat understandable since the plotline's presented from an outsider perspective, and naturally the outsider to the culture isn't going to be totally understanding of said culture. That's probably why the show's working. I've read and enjoyed the first two books, and the TV show seems like a very good adaptation.

Kindly do not put words in my mouth: I did not say anything about Game of Thrones advocating for patriarchy or incest.

Just because it's part of the story doesn't make it the message of the story.

Well, duh. That's like saying Girl with the Dragon Tattoo advocates for rape, if merely having it in is enough to be an advocate. I don't think GoT advocates for incest at all.

I don't think it necessarily advocates for patriarchy either, though I would say that GoT embraces it, doesn't really challenge it. It's going to suck that as a viewer I'm going to have watch 10 episodes worth of men thinking they're manly for not showing emotion at the beheading of another man or queens asking little girls if they've "bled" yet-- it's awkward, stupid, and grossly unfair to both genders (which is how patriarchy is). But I get that. I'd rather that not be the case, but it's not like GoT does it worse than other high fantasy stories or other media overall.

Sorry. I didn't mean to put words in your mouth. I was just kind of confused about the patriarchy and incest complaints, especially since you were listing them off alongside the racism issue. Since the racism issue is a problem with the material, while patriarchy and incest aren't so much problems with the material as they are part of the subject matter.
