ATLA: The Promise & Decolonization

Apr 16, 2012 20:39

I've been meaning to write this post since I got back from The Hunger Games and The Legend of Korra helped me detox from all the ~feelings~ I got from the film. It's been about a month and here it is!

ATLA: The Promise, with extra thoughts on the end of wars, decolonization, and history )

I was thinking a lot of the same things. They didn't cover as much as I'd expect for a subject so heavy.

I need to learn more about Japanese imperialism. I don't know as much as I want to. My friend had the same analysis. I think she was thinkin' Fire Nation = Japan so they'll most likely go the Japanese war crime route.

I think Zuko would think twice about taking Japan's lead on this and Aang will be quite the force to be reckoned with on the subject as well. He did go to Fire Nation school for awhile. (I just rewatched that episode and it gave me such North Korean propaganda chills.) But it's also one of those issues you have to vigilant about, because there are such strong forces that don't want to acknowledge that you (yes, you) can be that bad.

Oh man, Japanese war crimes are some of the most effed up stuff I've ever read about. If you ever get around to learning more about them, it might be best to do it on an empty stomach-- it's not for the squeamish. Seriously, I thought the gas chambers were bad...
