Kylea's birthday and other traumas

Kylea's birthday was great fun. She's an adorable happy near-toddler, and watching her dig into her birthday cake, (pictures to come), was enough to induce a diabetic coma in me, and I wasn't the one inhaling the sugary goodness*. She's such a sweet kid. She smiled and cooed throughout all the chaos. Eventually she succumbed to a short nap, ( Read more... )

Complications from these types of routine surgeries is rare. Seriously they do them a lot and primarily on older patients so they really know what they are doing.

My grampa still has his own hips but has had like a dozen surgeries in my lifetime. The most recent being about a year and a half ago at the age of 85 to have his carotid cleaned out. Which still eeks me out oooohhh gross. I always worry too though. But the risk is very low.

Sending good luck your mother's way.

Thanks. I know I'm probably worrying more than necessary, but I've just spent the evening having my mother go over details of her will, past family history, and everything else I may need to know if anything should go wrong. I started out somewhat freaked, but this evening has me in overdrive.

Thanks. I remember you writing about your sister's operation and how successful it was. It's one case I try to keep in mind when trying to convince myself that this is the right thing to do and that, after recovering, my mother will be glad she took this route.

Hey, pictures of Kylea!

I don't know about hips, but they can do knee replacements with a block instead of general anesthesia (I'm heading toward one and could only have it without general anesthesia, so I asked the rheumatologist).

My mother was under the impression that since she had scoliosis they wouldn't be able to give her a regional anesthetic. However, after speaking to my sister-in-law, who was at my mother's appointment with her, what the doctor actually said was that the curvature was so slight there was a 90% chance they would be able to give her a regional but that they wouldn't know until the time came and there was a possibility of a general anasthetic. So, while still concerned, I feel somewhat better now.
