It took me a long time to get used to going in my car. Finally, I put on a pullup, drank water until I was bursting, and then got in my car and drove around. Eventually I had an accident (in my pullup). The next time, I was able to let go when I just needed to go badly but before I couldn't control it...and everytime it got easier.

I still struggle sometimes to go in my panties in my car - even with plastic down, I worry about the seat too much to relax enough.

Your method would probably work on me as well, although I'm not intending to try it while I'm out of town. Not much in the way of spare clothes if there is a leak.

I'm betting it is much like going while in bed for me; a lot of time and effort is required to overcome a lifetime of conditioning. The fear for the car was part of it too I'm sure. I do remember thinking about that.
