So I recently got a friends request via facebook from this dude in Belgium with my lastname. He speaks very little english, I speak very little french, but we have been messaging back and forth for the better part of today. I wouldn't be surprised if your last name was there 'smith', as you think about it, it was probably a common peasant name, "I'm Gaston, from that castle, over there!" *points to random well known castle near village*

It makes sense when you know about feudalism in France.

Yeah, but the cool thing about that is that probably the name goes back to when they started to first use last names around 1000 CE. Which means I'm original... all those other fancy names are just poseurs ;)
