Oh, yes! This was exactly what I had in mind with the prompt!

*squee!!!*

I have to go to work now, but will leave a proper review in about ten hours. Meantime, thank you! Your Martin and his hard-earned self-awareness are excellent. Can't wait to come home and reread.

This was a wonderful sort of character-study. I loved all the details of what Martin went through after the shooting. I also really liked the ending and how it's open to imagination of what might happen next. :)

I'm such a sucker for Martin introspection, and I *adored* this. The way you write Martin is perfect - stark and no-nonsense, making lists in his head, giving himself tasks and targets - and the bleakness and frustration he is feeling just bleeds through your words. I love that it doesn't end happily exactly, but there's still hope for the two of them together.

he feels a hand on his chin. Blue eyes stare into brown.
Oh, my heart stopped here. Thank you for sharing this with us, I think you did an excellent job. :)

Longest ten hours of my life. :P Back to the squee!

I've always thought that Martin needed a job that would allow him to mellow out. The dark stuff he encounters as an FBI agent brings him down so much, and he really hasn't developed a healthy way to process it all in his mind. I love how this fic forces him to acknowledge that there are some things he won't ever be able to do, no matter how hard he tries. It's telling that when he wakes up, the first thing he realizes is everything's different. Actually, the only thing different is himself, and he's not so much different as defamiliarized--in a way that reveals the ways he has never quite fit in.

Danny, meanwhile, is stuck in his guilt: "...I wanted to see you. I missed you." "I’m sorry Martin. I’m really sorry." This says so much. He can't even hear what Martin's trying to say. Neither of them have dealt with the effects of that night, though Martin's on his way, and the truly sad part is they each have to do it alone. But that's also what I love about this story, that Danny and ( ... )

I am honored at all the thought and work you put into this, and if you do decide to revise, I'll be excited to see that too! (Will probably do the same for my fic, as it happens.) Stories about burgeoning self-awareness are a major kink for me, and this played out so naturally and with just the right amount of pain accompanying Martin's change that I really am grateful you chose this prompt over the others.

And I'd love to know what song inspired this!
