You know, something I might never understand is this: You go to a public or office bathroom, and the door is closed. So you knock, and oh! There's a person inside. But instead of saying something like, "Just a minute!" or "Be right out!", they say "Yes?" As if you were going to hold a conversation through the bathroom door. See, I think it's a matter of surprise. If I'm on the can I'm in my own little bubble and any intrusions on this bubble are met with shock and then the first words that my brain can muster. I might say "Yes." Without the question mark because when you knock aren't you really asking "Is there someone in here?" Then the response of "Yes" (sans question mark) is totally appropriate.
