APFT standards are higher compared to that. We have a two mile run and the minimum pushup required to even pass is something like 45, situps 56. But I know the USAF is different.
My secret with pushups? Weigh nothing. Or, in case that's not possible, do them every night before bed. Increase by 5 or 10 every week. So, start at near your max. Do that for a week or two if required, then increase steadily. The biggest part is form. Proper execution of the exercise will ensure proper muscle stimulation, and thus increased mass/ strength. Another secret that I was clued into by a Drill SGT was doing pushups with full ruck sacks on... like 40-60 lbs. It effectively increases your body weight, so you're forced to lift more. Then, when you aren't lifting nearly as much, you can go on forever. It was the reason I managed to max out my pushups.
