Pro-life Democrats

I had a discussion with my extremely pro-life in-laws this weekend in which they declared that they would never vote for a pro-choice politician. That's an argument that I have difficulty taking issue with. Abortion is the one issue that I'm willing to cede to George Bush. I can't imagine that anyone doesn't think abortion is horrible. I know that there are people who have them for selfish reasons, but the majority of reasons listed are economic ( ... )

You could make the argument that the two parties are exactly backwards on the abortion issue. Democrats are supposed to be ones that stand up for those who don't usually have a voice in our political system (unborn people would seem to qualify) and Republicans are supposed to be the ones in favor of personal liberty. The fact that they're switched on this issue causes a lot of incoherence. If it wasn't for abortion, small-government conservatives and the Christian Right would hate each other. As it is, they've cobbled together this strange party whose platform is full of logical inconsistencies. I would respect the Republicans' position on abortion more if they focused the same amount of attention on mitigating the consequences of outlawing abortion as they have on outlawing abortion.
