The Draco he had been, under his father’s shadow, desperate for acceptance.
Gone.
The Draco he had been, strutting about the castle, Slytherin to the core.
Gone.
The Draco he had been, unable to stop falling tears, unable to cast the killing curse that fateful night atop the astronomy tower.
Gone.
The Draco he had been, hard-hearted, hateful, and afraid.
Gone.
And in its place emerged the Draco that had been buried inside, waiting for the breath of life only true love can bring.
His heart, shaped into something new, surrounded by love.
His heart, stolen when he wasn’t looking.

It could never work.
It was sure to destroy them both. There was simply no place in this world for darkness and light to mix.
But loving her was so easy, so real. Could he really let go of the one thing that made him feel…alive?
Before her, his life was nothing but shadows…but her love had changed everything.
It was if she had reached up and stolen some of the sunshine to light his dark world.
She was his lifeline, and losing her would mean losing himself. She was his, and he was hers.
Reason and logic be damned.

Draco moved away from the blond in his arms, heaving a sigh. “I can’t. Not anymore,” he told her.
Her eyes clouded over with tears. “But why?”
He pointed to Hermione who was standing beside the door. “That witch over there. I love her. I’ve been in love with her. She stole my heart when I wasn’t even looking,” he said he moved away.
Hermione smiled as he approached, and lowered her head. “So, you’re mine now?”
“I suppose. Master thief that you are.”
She laughed and allowed him to lead her out of the room. “Sorry?”
“No, you’re not.”

To Draco's surprise, Hermione fell in step beside him and together they walked up Diagon Alley.
"So, how have you been?" she asked when the silence between them stretched too long. Draco gave her a wary look, but she was gazing back at him with eyes so kind, so warm, that his heart felt lighter than it had in years.
"I'm well. Even better now, thank you."
She smiled at his words and blushed at his appreciative smile. She looked so adorable that Draco impulsively pulled her aside and stole a kiss from her lips.
Shocked, Hermione's eyes widened. "Malfoy!"

“I hate you Malfoy! Hermione is supposed to be my girlfriend. She can’t chose you over me. You stole her from me. You fed her some love potion or blackmailed her or did something else to corrupt her.”
“Are you really this stupid, Weasley? I didn’t steal Granger from you. I didn’t blackmail her and I didn’t poison her with Amortentia. I didn’t do any of the things you’re accusing me of and do you want to know why not? Because she came to me freely. I didn’t have to force her. She wants me, not you. Deal with it.”

Draco smirked in that disarming way of his.
Hermione’s eyes narrowed, wondering what he had nicked this time. Indifferently, knowing it would annoy her further, he returned to his potion.
After the lesson, she cornered him.
“What did you-”
With a flourish, he extracted a vial from his pocket pouring its contents into her opened mouth. She sputtered, both from the liquid and indignation.
Then, he swooped down, giving her a long kiss.
“Hmm… seems like Felix knew what he was doing,” Draco commented placidly when they parted.
Hermione just gave a ‘humph’ before leaning towards him once more.

It was a snowy afternoon the day Hermione was pulled into the dark corridor and kissed for the first time.
Seconds turned into minutes. Too soon, the kiss broke, revealing the thief.
Malfoy smirked, but before she could protest, he spoke.
“I wanted to kiss you before Krum did.” He stepped back, bowing slightly before he left.
Furious, Hermione ran to her room. It wouldn’t count, she decided, if it wasn’t wanted.
During the Yule Ball, Viktor asks if she wants some air. They enter that same corridor.
“Have you ever been kissed, Hermione?”
She doesn’t think twice.
"Yes."

He was such a thief.
For instance, her quill would go missing from her desk. But before she could confront him about it, a new one would appear. It would be the best and most beautiful quill that he could find.
But it wasn't always a quill. She'd go to the shelf to find a book, and find it replaced with a first edition. Or her coffee mug would disappear.
The little ceramic heart on her desk had gone missing just this morning. There was a note where it had been.
‘You stole my heart, and now I’ve stolen yours.’

They stole him from her.
It was the end of the war, burdened with impossible losses and irreplaceable moments gone.
The distance between now and the time they had together widened, for it seemed like a lifetime ago, that their lips had grazed, their bodies touched.
“I would never leave you,”
Were his last breathless words to her, whispered into her ear, as his breath staggered against her neck.
He wouldn’t lie to her.
And now, as she stared up into the immense darkness, she could not help but wonder why they did not see fit to steal her too.

Constantly surrounded by a slew of people, Hermione was never alone. Hand pressed on her chest, she braced her hand against the wall of a shop in Diagon Alley.
“Might wanna go to St Mungo’s for that Granger,” It wasn’t an insult, a comment, it was a statement of fact.
“If I wanted--no, I don’t even want that,” Hermione huffed before she fainted.
When Hermione woke, Draco looked at her, his mouth permanently caught in his amused smile.
“Whatever it is, it’s not worth almost croaking it,” Draco’s smile turned passive, “Whatever it is, don‘t let it kill you, ‘kay.”

She does not hear him come up the stairs, and bites back her breath - her teeth insistent and sharp against her lips - when his fingers are suddenly tracing across her skin in the dark. The space where the collar of her robes meets the chestnut curls of her braid. Slowly, he undoes the white ribbon there, runs the band of silk through his fingers like flowing water. The cold and the moonlight against the bare space where he kisses her neck.
And then he is no longer there, her hair cascading and loose where the white ribbon used to be.

Every encounter left him in a cold sweat, wanting more yet dreading how much lower he would go. Draco was a fool to have thought that pushing her hard against walls and bruising her with his fingertips would make him the stronger one; She wanted it this way all along.
Pitied by the Light and forgotten by the Dark- Draco raged at a war that failed to distract him, protect him.
He wondered if the world could see her on him, her muddy fingerprints fresh, leaving not an inch to himself.
She was stealing him, and all Draco could do was watch.

So many lost. So many dead. People hurting everywhere.
For his part, Draco held tightly to the quickly cooling hand of the only one who had ever truly loved him back. Hermione. It wasn't fair.
He raged inside. He hurt.
All around him crying continued. They had all lost. They were all suffering. But there was a difference between him, and them. They would keep doing what was right, and good and noble.
He was never any of those things.
Draco stood. He left, without looking back. He would steal their lives, every last one of them. For stealing hers.

Hermione let Draco haul her unceremoniously into yet another alcove.
Words were neither necessary nor desired as his mouth crashed onto hers. The corridor was quiet but for their heavy breathing, and Hermione had to wonder at the fact that she-she-was able to reduce Draco Malfoy to a series of moans and breathy promises.
Promises she had no intention of allowing, and he had no intention of keeping.
Hermione had learned long ago that kisses freely, willingly given were not what he sought.
Kisses that were stolen; hard, punishing kisses were what kept him coming back to her.

"You've had your laugh. Hand it over." Hermione jumped, grabbing for the parchment Malfoy held overhead. He laughed and wriggled it.
"Told you what you have to do for it."
She huffed. Folded her arms. Tapped her foot.
He smirked.
Hermione rolled her eyes and rose on her toes, arms twining around Malfoy's neck. She kissed him, deep and slow, and he moaned when she pulled away. Hermione snatched the parchment and returned his smirk. "You don't have to steal my reports for a kiss, Malfoy. Even if it's more fun." She patted his cheek. "See you at dinner, love."

His fingers rapped her desktop. “I’d like to report a theft.”
“Was the theft magical?”
“As the object was well-guarded, yes.”
“Did you see the suspect?”
“Bushy hair, sort of smart.” She frowned. “Brilliant, really,” he conceded.
“A description of the purloined object?”
He held up a sketch that made her smile.
“I didn’t think you had one of those.”
Draco winced. “Well-guarded, remember?”
“Was it a theft if the suspect didn’t know she had it?”
“Perhaps not,” he replied. “I’m willing to drop charges if I receive an object of equal value in return.”
Hermione sighed. “You already have.”
