Among all there is to love in this, I especially adore that you had Draco making the argument that Lupin and Tonks rushing off into battle wasn't the best thing for their son... It's always really bothered me, only because JKR put in the whole part with Harry berating Lupin for running off into danger and leaving his family, which shames him into facing up to it. Then, Tonks just rushes off into the battle without a thought, and the point Harry (JKR) seemed to think was so important was rendered moot.

Aside from the fact that I was really annoyed that Lupin died, THAT particularly bothered me.

So... yeah. Liked that. :)

Your handling of Crabbe's mother is heart-breaking. A truly unique picture of an overlooked minor character.

The first fanfiction i ever read was Marauder fic, so i was pretty annoyed that JKR killed every single one of them off too. Sirius I get - Harry needed to go on his final mission alone. But Lupin! TT_TT Harry basically just ran past his dead body and that was it. So unnecessary. Especially considering the family theme JKR had going on with him. I'm glad that you agreed with Draco on that point!

I think the scene with Crabbe's mother was probably my favourite to write, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting!

Hot damn. How could I possibly not love this? There are so many great things in this, I can't even stand it.

First of all, the premise is amazing and so unique. I've never heard of someone writing about Draco reacquiring his wand, and that you came up with such a long fic to accompany such a seemingly simple premise is amazing. Not to mention I love your writing style--it just floooows--and adore your characterization of ... god, everyone. Also, I'm a bit of a sucker for Draco!POV fics, so there's that.

This comes with the fact that it is his POV, but I am so happy that you have him not bowing to the "light" side's demands for apologies and all that. And dealing with Crabbe. And the unglamorous side of being a post-war Slytherin. I love his voice. Particularly when he was describing the holes in the walls between the magic and Muggle worlds and his nightmares as a child. And this:

Draco flushed. Merlin. He was wearing flannel pajamas. And he’d opened the front door. His mother would have smacked him with a newspaper.Hermione is ( ... )

This is wonderful writing. Very evocative; I'm feeling all the feelings. I'll have to confess though - it's hard for me to feel compassion for the whiny band of pure bloods, when they're so very, very revolting as people. The fact that Draco conveniently forgets that Hagrid did try to teach him, but he chose not to listen, is particularly infuriating. It's not that he's a git, it's that he's such a myopic and self-satisfied git that makes me want to bunch him in the face.

The above doesn't ably to Mrs. Crabbe of course. Poor woman.

I actually found it refreshing that the fic doesn't play into the cliché of so many from the "dark" side becoming immediately reformed. Change is gradual, and they probably feel they've been wronged, so why should they change? Draco is far from perfect in every aspect of his character, in my opinion, so to see him as so full of himself and narrow-minded is very true to him. The same with how Hermione's been portrayed here: utterly infuriating in her self-righteousness.

I agree with your sentiment here, withdrawnred. I liked that we get the feeling that any change in attitude from the Slytherins wouldn't just automatically occur after the war ended, but that their prejudices are so ingrained that it's going to take time and exposure to Muggles and the 'new way' of doing business in the wizarding world that will, eventually, wear them down into grudging acceptance.

Of course, saying that, I also agree with the Anonymous poster who says its hard to feel sorry for the Slytherins, because inherently, they are still very ethnocentric, vitriolic and self-absorbed.

FYI: I have read a slash story with Draco/Harry regarding the return of Draco's wand and how it changed as a result of Potter's touch and how Draco had to learn how to reuse magic as a result, but never a het story on the premise. What a neat, original premise! :)

Oh, I agree on... let's say rational or intellectual level. But on an emotional level, they (Pansy, Draca, and Blaise, not Goyle so much) make me seethe here. Which is not a bad thing, really. :) Draco does to me in canon too, to be honest. I like a good redemption story, but a close look into a mind of a git can be great too, and it's done really, really well here.

Draco had grown up with the vague impression that there was a stone wall all the way around the wizarding world, keeping out the Muggles like the Great Wall of China. Every time somebody spoke to a Muggle, they’d pull out a stone and press their mouths to the hole. Muggleborns meant even bigger holes, even if you made them wriggle through. Eventually, though, there’d be so many holes that all it would take was one good push, and then the Muggles would come lurching through like a swarm of Inferi.

This has to be the best description of Dracos fear of Muggles that I have ever read.
