Fandom (and General) Icon Usage

Jan 18, 2007 16:09

I know that icons are the sort of media that pretty much tends to have a free-for-all air about them. It's usually a case of "Look what I made! Use them!!!" Sometimes, however, there are instances where makers specify that they want to show off their work, but not have it used by the fandom (world) at-large.

Oh, an iconning we will go. )

I think you have started the process correctly by asking the person not to use your icon anymore. Now, if this person chooses to ignore your rightful request, then by all means, boot them.

Stealing is stealing.

That's why I have always only used material for icons/banners/bars etc.. that has not only been freely given, but also available without any requests for link-back, or credit. And more than a few of these graphics have been made by me. It can be a time consuming thing to do, this making of icons, so you have ALL the right to feel possessive over the finished product!

And that's my two-cents.

*Hugs*

I thought so. I went ahead and screened the comments, too, so that it wouldn't seem as though I was only asking them to remove the icon to be wanky. That was never my intention, but people can come along and make it into such a situation.

I do try to use icons that I have an immediate name to credit. If I don't, I mark it as such and leave a space for the makers' names if they want me to credit their work. I mean, it's only fair.

*glompy hugs*

How have you been? I've missed seeing you around. Darned real life always taking over things.

Yeah, no kidding! Sometimes RL is a @$%!&#@ pain.

I'm a new "mom"...to two of the ugliest mutts on the face of this planet! Have the whole dramatic (and quite weird) story of their New Years Eve rescue on my LJ. *Snorts*

Other than that, enjoying a 'home-early-from-work' kinda afternoon. It's nice.

Oooo! I shall have to go over and have a read. I know that I have not read much on LJ that wasn't fan fiction related in the past few months. That' usually all I have time to squeeze in before I have to go to work or run errands.

Yeah. I usually work in the afternoons and evenings.

You sound like you're going down the sensible path in dealing with this. If they refuse to co operate, boot 'em. It's not fair to others to use their work without permission.

That said, I do sometime use icons which I don't remember where I got them from, or I don't know who made them. I have a statement in my profile saying I'm happy to credit or remove any icons if people see me using theirs without credit because, like I said, it's not on purpose. Unlike this person, I am happy to fix it.

Anyway, that's my two cents.

By the way, I've been meaning to ask- did you get my card? Because it should've been there by now...

I thought I'd try to be at least a little reasonable about it. I mean, what good would it do to flip out?

I really should add something like that to my profile. I simply have unknowns marked as such, and encourage others to do so, if they plan to take those icons.

What really gets me is that she credited other people for their icons, just not mine.

Yep! I did. I wrote an entry talking about the cards that I received it all! = D

No good at all! *g*

Well marking unknowns is basically the same thing- probably even better than what I did. :D

That's a bit odd. I wonder why she didn't credit you?

Really? I must've missed it! Sorry. I'll go look now...

Hee. Darn it. I had hoped that you would say that it would do me some good. ; D

Yeah, but I never said that I would change those unknowns. *worries*

I don't know. Some of the credited icons are from people I know, too. *shrugs*

Let me. It was in a SGA fandom/ New Year's Resolution entry that mainly focused on how much I wanted to molest David Hewlett. *laughs*

*noddles* It is, and I don't know why some people don't get that.
