Ms. Mikami, she wrote carefully in her Moleskine notebook; her handwriting was sharp and elegant. Ms. K. Mikami. K. Mikami-san. She liked the Latin alphabet: the letters were so pleasantly simple, and somehow it was much easier to distance yourself from your own words by using a foreign graphic system. K. Mikami. Kiyomi M.
She glanced at the young prosecutor, who was sorting his papers: everything was in perfect order, of course, but the sheer amount of documents seemed almost frighteningly huge. Despite their being separated by a long office desk, she could observe his movements clearly, and he looked slightly tired. K. Mikami, wife of T. Mikami, she scribbled down. He paused and turned to her. “Takada-san? I’m sorry, you must be bored.”
“No, Mikami-san,” she shook her head and closed the notebook. “It’s me who must apologize - I really do appreciate your help.”
He sighed. “Please give me five more minutes. The 2008 archives are too large.” He took the next folder. “And excuse me for wasting your time like this.”
“It’s alright, don’t worry,” she replied softly. “I - I like doodling.” Frankly, it was a rather stupid thing to say, even though the statement itself was true to a certain extent. Her appointment diary resembled an artist’s sketchbook, although her creations weren’t too impressive for the most part.
“I personally can’t draw at all,” he confessed suddenly.
“Oh?” she smiled. “I thought you could do anything.”
Judging by his face, he didn’t quite get her joke. “That’s impossible, Takada-san,” he responded with a puzzled expression. “Well, my mother used to praise my pictures, but she was horribly subjective, so…”
“Ah, but she probably just loved you a lot, Mikami-san,” she pointed out matter-of-factly. He blinked, coughed and returned to his folders. “Right - Takada-san, you may find this report interesting for your program planning. Now we need the second half…”
She nodded, opened her notebook again and wrote Kiyomi Mikami-san in flawless kanji.
