Why didn't L tell the task force that he has prepared financially for them?

Please enlighten me about this scene in the manga & anime: http://www.onemanga.com/Death_Note/40/09/

I don't understand why L doesn't tell the Japanese police that he has prepared financially for them.  I think the reason lies deeper than L's unsocialized nature... He's testing Aizawa's determination, yes, but why does it anger Aizawa so much?

I think this was one of L's meaner moments. I think he was just curious to see what they would choose to do. Essentially he's toying with them - after all, how would knowing that they weren't going to be paid at all prove their responsibility toward the case? L chided Aizawa and guilted him into leaving.

Aizawa got mad (rightfully so) because L was toying with his emotions and putting on a useless charade, and then upon Watari's interruption Aizawa finds out L was just bullshitting them all.

I think it says that L is a bit of a bastard, and sometimes likes to play with people's minds just to see how they will react.

I have to echo what Serria said. He was manipulating them and doing this to test their loyalties (or their interests), seeing if they would stick with the case no matter the consequences. He really laid the situation on thick. I'm curious now if Watari's interruption was scripted in the whole plan or if Watari felt the need to step up and call L on this, though Watari's morals are as questionable as L's so it could have been the former rather than the latter.

In Aizawa's case, L's trick ran even deeper because he had the most to lose by leaving the police, but he had a lot to lose by leaving the Taskforce, especially how he was mourning Ukita. Aizawa isn't too fond of L anyway, so learning that he screwed with him like that was just too much for him to tolerate. How L added the "But I like you, Aizawa" was further manipulating him. As Serria said, L is a bit of a bastard.

Haha, that's a very interesting scene. I don't have much to add that hasn't been mentioned before. I'll just say that L is taking quite the risk there. He must be so confident for taking the risk of losing the only agents willing to work with him!
Though... I guess that if they're so willing to work for the case even without payment to begin with, it's unlikely that most of them will leave upon finding out that L lied to them.
