Why did L accept the idea of Light being confined knowing he was up to something?

...
That's the question... since Light's confinement only helped clear himself of accusations.

Well, I suppose it's because Light wanted to be confined, therefore L expected things to work out favorably for Light. What he expected though was that the killings would continue, thereby "conveniently" proving Light's innocence. To L, in that backwards way, this would if anything prove that Light is Kira. Or should I say, L is already certain that Light is Kira, so maybe he just wants to see something happen, believing that if he knows and expects that Light is up to something, he can counteract it and win?

That, or I guess, he thinks Light looks good in handcuffs. :P

Light's suggestion sounded very reasonable even if it was clear that he'd be up to something (and L also made it clear that he didn't trust or believe the results of it). I guess that L was really curious as to what would happen and what kind of plan Light would have to clear his name. It might have been a very interesting situation for L.

no matter what the outcome of the confinement was it would not have cleared Light of suspicion in L's eyes. I am honestly not sure why Light was confined other than it could be used in hopes that something would miraculously happen to change L's mind or maybe to make Light believe he had a chance at fooling L. As i said i have absolutely no idea and am making on the spot speculations
