I disagree that L "doesn't hide his true self". L most certainly, at least in my opinion, puts on a mask that he uses to deal with people. His inside thoughts are often a lot more cruel and ruthless than what he says out loud, at least judging by the inner monologue we hear him say. It's true that he's also a very enigmatic character, but that rather leads me to believe that there's a lot more to him than what he lets on, rather than what we see is the complete L.
L is most certainly dishonest, and a cheater. But how do you define who he really is? He's very much up for interpretation. However, I see a lot of his words and mannerisms around the task force to be a front to manipulate people, sometimes with no particular goal rather than to weird them out or throw them off guard. I'm not sure I believe either that he always has a "good reason". Who knows how his mind works, but I don't see him as very sympathetic toward people, so..
L is such a liar, it's painful. I don't feel like ranting atm, but dude. L's worse than Light in that sense. Only Light's mask is much more obvious as we see one side one episode and another the next. We never get to see L chilling in his room (though there is that one episode where he was alone before showing his face-- he certainly did not hunch <3).
In DN I think that we are also led to believe that L takes on some horrendous criminals. I don't think Light was the only guy L had to worry about, I like to think that he took down plenty of serial killers and the like where he had to have something between them and himself. Especially since most Serial Killers lover to get into the heads of their pursuers and freak them out.
Now, my question is, how can we trust what L is saying when he say's he's a liar and a cheat? maybe he's telling us that so that we don't trust him.
He is most definetely a liar. He was able to lie about most things such as his suspision of light. He used the percentage system with light but when he meant for ex. 3% he actually meant something like 97.3% or something close to there. L lies about his friendship with Light which I find sorta heartbreaking but then again it's just a show so i'm not going to go full into that. He even admits that he is a liar in the relight.
