Wikipedia isn't really reliable when it comes to details like that because the info can essentially be changed by anyone who feels like it. (I have seen known canon details changed on some entries because someone didn't like what was there, but that's another fandom). So if it says Mello is specifically from Europe it means that detail was added my someone who isn't the original author because canon never says anyone's nationality at Wammy's House ( ... )

I ALWAYS have a huge problem when it comes to brainstorming Near's nationality, but I usually have Mello being a German mix myself, as well as Matt being an Irish/Scottish American...I believe that since there are not as many "pure bloods" in society any more, or rather that it is not a hugely common ideal, it would seem rather normal that these children would be mixes of sorts...

I like that we do have some thoughts in common, though I haven't really given a big thought to near being British, interesting...

This will be a long post since I'm in an incredibly boring lecture... I agree with a lot of what liam_sensei has said above, but I thought I'd share some of my own speculations based on names and their origins. I know that names can come from anywhere and don't necessarily indicate someone's nationality, but then again they're often an indicator to some degree especially in fiction ( ... )

I always pin down Near's nationality as American, cause, well, that's what his name expresses to me, but he might as well be British because he spent much of his life in Winchester, haha.

And I really do feel like Mello hails from eastern Europe or around that area. I like to wonder if the collapse of the USSR lent a hand to his being an orphan.

My god, Mello and Near, it's like the Cold War. fskfjs *_*

I thought I had already been nerdy enough over this post... but I just had a historygasm when I read that xD

If only Matt was Chinese.

Glad to be of service xD But the Cold War thing is so epic. I remember seeing an icon with Mello and Near with the words, 'Cold War with little boys'. I can't believe I just now got it.

Near... I like the idea of him being British mainly because of this 'exquisite royal British vibe' I get from him. >W< Also, his last name, River, could most likely be a variation off Rivers (which is of English origin). I looked up information regarding that last name and it originate from various places in northern France called Rivières; plural form of old French 'River'. Interestingly, I once had a dream where Mello (from Germany) and Near (from France) met during wartime and they were both fighting for their own countries (i mentioned this dream to Akane once). So that was a pleasant discovery for me. ^^

Everyone above pretty much sums up Mello for me. (I'm lazy... Haha)

ICOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON, where did you get the delicious picture from!? I wants!!

And also, very interesting insight, a lot of people seem to like Mello being German ((I know I do^^)) but with Near it tends to be harder to choose an appropriate nationality for him...This discussion has been really helpful so far...And yum, the idea of Germany vs/x France with Mello and Near is like such a tempting little dish of delight...

Jeevas is Spanish, River seems to be more of a British or American name, and I believe Mihael Keehl is Croatian?

I can promise you Jeevas is not Spanish XD The first time I read of a Spanish Matt was in MRS-Jeevas' fics, and since then it grew on me, but Jeevas isn't Spanish at all.
Mihael Keehl sounds okay for Croatian or some other country around that spot, maybe even russian? It's cool to me. Slavics are so elegant and pretty <3
I think River sounds very american, more that british.

It does sound Hispanic, so I assumed. Never assume.

And (I think) the russian form of Mihael is Mikhail?

It seems the russian is Mijaíl, at least that's how it's written in Wikipedia for Bakunin and Gorvachov XD
