It's ridiculous to call life short. We don't even know what life is. Do you really think you can say you know how to live? Many people have SLEPT longer than we've lived [Bukowski I stole that from].

How can we call life short when we don't even know that half of it?

There are certain instances in a person's life that makes them realize how fast time goes by, thereby making life... whatever we know of it... seem short-lived. Tragedies, specifically, do this. It's unkind to call people's feelings "ridiculous" in times of grief. A little more sensitivity would help, instead.
