Big concepts come in small packages

[There's a boy who looks about fifteen standing in the hallway, examining his surroundings. Several things set him apart from the usual new arrivals. For one, he looks very calm, even for a version of Near: almost eerily serene. For another, he has a model of a towered city at his feet, populated with very detailed figures of various people and other beings, some of whom might seem to be moving. But that's probably a trick of the light, right? And then there are his feet, which are bare, and--one can see if one looks very closely--don't quite touch the ground. He looks around with a small lift of his lips, too small to be called a proper smile, and curls up on the floor by his city, picking up a figure with black wings.]
