Series 2 - Ficlet 1

The bell above the door - one of the old-fashioned ones, which actually included a bell in the design - rang out softly as Alex pushed the door open. He wasn't sure if the store was even open, but he began to walk around all the same. The gold and silver in the cases was glittering gently under the soft lighting as he looked over them all.

A quiet giggle came from behind him and Alex turned, only to see an empty desk. He cleared his throat. As he expected, a head peeked over the top, followed by a long stream of profanity and shuffling. Thirty seconds later, a blushing girl stood up and sidled sheepishly out of the door. When the bell had rung once again, a shirtless man drew himself into a stool that was perched behind the desk.

"You looking for anything in particular?"

Two weeks later, Alex entered to the store again to find a man leaning against the desk, touching the sales clerk's chest gently. He cleared his throat and turned away to look over the rings in one of the cases. He heard the bell ring above the door and looked over his shoulder at the clerk grinning at him.

"You seriously are trying to ruin my game, aren't you?" Alex twisted around quickly to look at the clerk, and raised his eyebrow.

"Did you honestly just say game? We don't live in the 1990's Harlem, dude." The clerk crossed his arms over his chest and raised his eyebrow back at Alex.

"We're not in 1960's California either, dude…" Alex smiled and left.

Alex created a habit of going into the store whenever he passed. Unfortunately, he only passed once every week or two to go to the grocery store. The clerk wasn't there every time he went in, but he managed to pass the time with looking around the store. When the clerk was there, he didn't stay very long at all, but mainly because he liked to think he was being aloof.

He wasn't.

"Good morning Mervin." The clerk said as soon as he entered the store. He was leant against the wall behind the desk and looking at Alex.

"Mervin?" Alex didn't want to laugh, but it was hard not to. Mervin seemed such a strange name to give someone, let alone the fact that it wasn't his own.

"Well, I had to call you something." The clerk pulled his chair forward and went to sit down, leaving Alex to walk around the store.

Just as he was leaving Alex turned to the clerk.

"Alex." The clerk just smiled and nodded, picking at his fingernails nonchalantly.

"I'll stick with Mervin if that's alright with you." Alex really did laugh then.

The next time Alex returned, the shop was closed. He looked through the windows at the dark room and lifted his hand to knock on the glass. Instead, he looked at his clenched fist, then the glass and then shook his head.

He waited a few minutes before finally walking away.

The clerk - not his clerk, another one - looked at him weirdly as he entered the store. He was holding a bunch of flowers in one hand and as he walked towards her, her expression didn't change. He thought that was a little unfair. He couldn't have been that bad looking.

"Excuse me, could you please give these to…" It was only then that Alex realised that he had no idea what he was doing. Alex wasn't spontaneous and he wasn't used to the strange embarrassment that came with it. "…the guy with the hair," he said, gesturing with his hand, "and the lip ring?" Her face softened and she stood up to take the flowers from him.

"Nate?" He nodded, even though he didn't know the name of the guy that he wanted her to give them to. "Who are they from?"

"Tell him Mervin, he'll understand. There's a note with them though." She smiled and let him walk from the store.

~~

Mervin,

Meet me in front of the store at 8 on Tuesday.

Nate.

P.S. - How gay were those flowers?

~~

That sucked. It was gonna be pretty but I ran out of time.
