ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER
(please note when/if you need to approximate or invent any important bits of information)
LJ username:
do_great_thingsCanon and canon type (TV, novel, etc.): Smallville, TV Series
Name: Lex Luthor
Age: 22
Brief backstory (200+ words): The only time Lex felt normal was when he was young. While his father wasn't the most loving even then, his mother Lillian more than made up for that with her caring and loving nature. Not even losing his hair during a meteor shower in Smallville did much to change that. His happiness increased after the birth of his brother Julian. But it was sadly short lived as extreme post-partum depression struck his mother. It caused her to fear (perhaps not entirely irrationally) that Lionel might pit two boys against one another, and in her depressed state she smothered Julian in his sleep. For fear of what his father would do to his mother, Lex took the blame. He knew Lionel wouldn't do anything to harm his only heir even if it caused Lionel's deep resentment for his son. Ultimately it was a resentment that Lex wouldn't understand, as he suffered a mental breakdown and suppressed all memories of his brother's death. This and the death of his mother two years later of illness, ended any feeling of love, family or security Lex had.
Lionel Luthor's substituted love expensive gifts and the best boarding schools, trying to buy his son's affection and loyalty. He hated the school, as he was severely teased and bullied for his baldness. Of course his father used this to his advantage, making it a lesson so his son would end up as strong and ruthless as himself. In fact, everything his father gave or did for Lex was a test, to make him worthy of being a Luthor. This caused rebellion in teenage Lex, who did everything from fighting and clubbing, to drugs and sex, anything he could to anger his father. The only thing he didn't do was get kicked out of school, due to both his extremely high grades and his father's reputation. His rebellion continued into college, but despite this he did as his father had done and graduated from Princeton's business and bio engineering schools in less then four years. He was in graduate school at Yale when his father had another test for him, sending him to the out of touch Smallville to run the LuthorCorp factory there. In getting him out of the public eye, he hoped to quell Lex's rebellious tendencies.
Instead, Lex's rebellion changed. Rather than screwing up and learning humility, as had been Lionel's plan, Lex proved to be a smart and generous business man. He turned the factory around and, despite Lionel's many attempts to sabotage him, even orchestrated an employee buyout, forming his own company. On his first day in Smallville, he lost control of his car and hit Clark Kent, causing both him and the car to fall into the river below. This would lead both to the closest friend Lex ever had and the start of an obsessive curiosity into the nature of the meteor shower and the effects on its residents, himself included. He also found love in Smallville and was on the way to his honeymoon with his new wife, Dr. Helen Bryce, when the plane crashed on a deserted island. A mental break with reality and one imaginary companion later, Lex was rescued to get revenge on his black widow wife. It is after he gets his revenge and starts to get back into his life that he wakes up in an abandoned city.
Brief description of personality (100+ words): At this point in his life, Lex's personality is in a state of constant flux. On one side is an honest, good-hearted young man that Lex wants to be, and on the other is a ruthless man on the constant quest for knowledge and power that he is afraid of becoming. Clark and his parents provide a model for who Lex wants to be, but he isn't sure how to get there.
As a teenager, Lex was callous and self-destructive. It was his arrival in Smallville and his meeting with Clark Kent that caused him to want to change his self-destructive behaviour and his life. He proved eager to come out from under his father's ruthless reputation by instead being honest, kind and willing to use his wealth and reputation to help others. While he will get defensive when judged with suspicion due to his name, Lex will do anything he can to prove people that he is not his father. He is extremely compassionate and protective of those he trusts, doing anything in his power to help them, even to lengths others would find both underhanded and extreme. The end doesn't justify the means, but if it works out for the better, does it matter?
But Lex knows there are still dark elements inside of him, those which he is afraid he will embrace and is trying very hard to suppress. He has a deeply obsessive nature that causes him to stop at nothing to find out the answer to the unexplained. While it would eventually become an obsessive quest for power, at this point in his life he's safely channeling it into the mystery of the meteor rocks. Occasionally, his obsessiveness strays into the mystery that is his best friend, Clark Kent, and the car crash they met over. But, he does his best to keep it hidden for the sake of their friendship and to protect Clark from people who would take advantage of him, such as Lionel. He is stubborn and forceful, which are a terrible force when combined with his constant need for control of a situation, which can be quite terrifying depending on where it's directed.
Lex is in a constant quest for the things he once had but has since lost thanks to his father: love and family. Despite trying to get out from under his shadow and rebelling against him, everything Lex does is an unconscious bid for his father's approval. The thing he wants most in his life is his father to love him. This is why the deaths of Julian and his mother are such major points in his life and why he deeply envies the Kents. He wants people to care about and people to care about him, which is why he often looks on Clark as a little brother who he would do anything for. He craves this so much that when he trusts someone to fall in love with, he loves quickly and strongly, which is why his courtship of Dr. Helen Bryce was so very short. His main problem with dealing with people is his father's influence has made it easier for him use people then to trust them. Helen's betrayal has made the problem worse, in now he's not sure he can trust anyone.
What is true is that Lex is an extremely intelligent and intellectual young man who is trying to figure out exactly who he is, though if it's for better or for worse remains to be seen.
Any special skills? Lex's most important characteristic and skill is his genius level intellect. He has degrees in Business and Bio Engineering. He is also an expert in martial arts, swordplay, and gun handling.

Once Lex was behind the safety of his bed room door, he stopped to lean his head back against the cool polished wood. Even with the malaria, sun poisoning and imaginary enemy of his own making, today had been more emotionally draining then any day stuck on the island. First confronting Helen about her plot to kill him and forcing her to disappear and then the conversation with his father, who had kindly pointed out just how proud he was of Lex's Machiavellian gesture. How did the one thing Lex had ever wanted from his father, other then his love, make him feel so dirty? Still...now that he was going back to LutherCorp and working for his father again, Lex hoped he could make him proud in other ways and make sure his illusion on the island was not a self fulfilling prophecy.
Resolving to visit the Kent's tomorrow, both for a special errand he needed to run and to visit Clark for a grip on reality, Lex left the door and got ready for bed. Thanks to his healing abilities from the meteor shower, his burns and scars were almost gone so it was easy for him to settle against the sheets and fall asleep.
Lex knew before he even fully awoke that he was not in Smallville. The months on the island had heightened his senses for his surroundings, even while sleeping, as a matter of protection. He opened his eyes to find him self sprawled out in the doorway of what looked like abandoned building, in the middle of an abandoned city. He was dressed in some of his best clothes, which afforded him a brief feeling of deja vu, through an abandoned city was a step up from an deserted island. As he stood up and dusted himself off, Lex wondered who was responsible for his location this time and how they'd gotten him in his sleep. Was it really his father this time?
Looking around, Lex realized that the language of the street signs and such were in a foreign language, that almost looked alien in nature. Certainly not one Lex had ever seen, though other then that, it looked like a typical city. He took a step back into the street to look up at the building he'd awoken in front of. He may not have been able to recognize the sign, but he knew a nightclub when he saw one. At least they'd thought to dump him in front of something vaguely familiar, Lex thought to himself bitterly.
