My mom has a trans guy in her quilting class.  It's actually a couple - a woman and an FtoM guy.  The other day in class she was trying to get the class to quiet down and said something like "ladies, ladies, let's quiet down," and the wife called her on being exclusionary.  She apologized and said "oh yes, and gentleman."  When she was telling me

I think in general it wouldn't hurt any of us to take the gender out of our statements. "People, people, let's quiet down" would have been perfect. And I'm sure that there were a few uppity women in that class who wouldn't prefer to be called ladies, either.
