My sister is finally on track to graduate college by the end of this academic year--which just happens to coincide with the due date for her ( Read more... )

Your poor wife.

Indeed... she's stuck with me! As the only one of my siblings to have had the sense to have married someone from a non-abusive family background, I'm not letting go.

No, I'm just thinking of my own mom, and the grief she got for years and years from my dad's side of the family because she didn't clean under her refrigerator.

My wife does clean under the refrigerator--I think she started doing that when we were fighting a roach infestation in New York. I'm pretty sure she doesn't do it as often as my mother, though.

I don't recommend it. (Unless you're fighting a roach infestation.)

I had to do it once. It was like finding the sausage factory behind the hot dog shop. Even without any bugs underneath it, it was like finding out there was another living creature in the tiny kitchen. The cats were fascinated of course.

I am about to marry into a family with a bunch of evangelical christians in it.. you cannot imagine the Good Christian Wife/Mother posts. But from a feminist point of view, I feel compelled to note that there is nothing unfeminist about baking... or cleaning under the fridge. Luckily your daughter will learn her recipes from you, though, and not all that gluten free dairy free crap (unless she needs it for health reasons).

Baking is my weak point in the kitchen: [spouse] does most of it. (Long story that comes down to my lack of a sweet tooth and tendency to get squicked out by the sensation of dough on my hands.)

I think perhaps the "unfeminist" part is where the women compare themselves to her along gender rather than job/role lines, and the mother-in-law reinforces this as husband-retention behavior?

Admittedly I'm all about the baking, but I did not know that you could clean under refrigerators. To me, the glory of a refrigerator is that it's big and immobile and thus represents a part of the floor that you don't need to clean.
