Transubstatiation refers to the Catholic belief that the bread and wine of the Lord's Supper become the true flesh and blood of Christ during the mass. Most Protestants (I am an example) believe that the bread and wine commemorate the Last Supper and the suffering and death of Christ. Lutherans are in between.

I suppose that one might transubstantiate one's self in any number of ways. Bread would not be essential.
