on # 2: 'this alien shore' by c s friedman soooort of takes that on. oh, and 'blindsight' by peter watts somewhat, too. both of those more in terms of ship navigation more than law enforcement. blindsight was nominated for the hugo this year; it's a fascinating read although some of the science is definitely beyond my comprehension - but even the stuff i didn't understand was fascinating. anyway, it's a weird but good read and has an MPD character. and is a free online read at http://www.rifters.com/real/Blindsight.htm if you're interested.

People with DID/MPD can possess amazing attributes. One identity might have blue eyes, while another has brown, and the color changes upon shift. One might have diabetes, while another does not. It's really an incredible disorder.

"2) ....The guy effectively downloads personalities that he compartmentalized to be specialists in whatever police task he needs to perform. There is totally a Sci-Fi book screaming to be written here."

Check out Philip K. Dick's _A Scanner Darkly_ (the novel, not the movie; the movie doesn't live up to the novel).

Actually I have seen and read both. The book is always a little better but I thought the movie did a pretty decent job.
