Sort of. It's been my experience when teaching that handouts help people who are interested in the material retain more of the lesson. On the other hand, the moment you hand out handouts, people stop listening to you and start reading the handout.
I've found it best to just teach the class, and then at the end offer handouts to people who want them.
Right there with Aaron. I *never* use handouts, if I can *at all* help it. You can engage your audience just fine, Jock, unaccustomed to public speaking as you are :).
I haven't seen the class, but given the topic, I have to wonder how useful a handout would be. I mean, this is schtick...you either get inspired or you don't, you run with it or you don't. You don't want people to start looking for a formula or check-list for schtick.
That said, different people learn in different ways: seeing vs. doing vs. reading. Some might like a collection of bullet points after the fact, but that's up to you - if it is going to hamper your flow, then don't bother. If you don't give a damn about the script, go for it. :)
And I agree with Aaron and Mateo - if you do it, hand it out at the end. Otherwise, you will be looking at the tops of people's heads instead of their faces as they pore over the paper.
Btw - I checked "Yes - to teach others" mainly because I am interested in how one would do a hand out for this kind of thing. Don't take that vote as highly motivated - I am just being nosey.
Well it looks like time constraints are going to answer this one for me. I am not expecting a huge turn out this time anyway as I am in the first slot of the day and will be up against our "key" speaker. I think given anough time I may be able to write up something decent went time and patience allows. I am also ass deep in story mode so that is taking up a lot of my brain time as well.
thanks all for responding! This gives me some stuff to work with later on.
