Well, Tolkien's worldbuilding is much better than Baum's. I think it was Ryk Spoor who put together an atlas of Oz for some project and discovered it's just dozens of miles across.
And Tolkien codified an awful lot of the tropes we think of as fantasy today. (This is not a surprise: Del Rey as an editorial imprint was consciously aping LotR to try and replicate its success. I think David Hartwell talks about this, but it might be someone else.)

Why does he spare Tolkien? THE HOBBIT is obviously nothing but The Wizard of Oz And The Seven Dwarfs.
